Can I prepare for IAS just by studying 3 hours everyday (I have started reading NCERT)? How can a busy working professional study and pass the exam within 1–2 years?

Let me break the bad news first. It is going to be really tough. You are going up against people who are toiling 10-12 hours every day, for a whole year and more. Put together in a combined manner your effort is going to be paltry. I know people would resort to “quality matters more than quantity” advice to encourage you. But remember, there are a lot of brilliant people (engineers, doctors, lawyers and what not) who have dived head-first into this rat race. In addition to the capability to study qualitatively, they are also gaining on you quantitatively.

Now, the good news. UPSC has completely changed the scenario under which you are tested in the last two years. The amount of knowledge required in the static subjects have drastically come down. Instead it is your aptitude to analyse an issue that is tested these days. This means that the IITian who revises the static subject is not going to have a place where he can use it (most probably)

Since you have only 3 hours a day, divide it between two things.

  1. Reading the opinion page of The Hindu and Business Standard (45 minutes)
  2. Reading your optional subject (2:15 hours)

On weekends, I suggest you cover as much of the static part of the syllabus as you can and then start revising. Don’t be disheartened. It will be tough initially. But people have endured through harder things and have come out through the other end, stronger and successfull

All the Best!
